THE BIG DIG

In view of the current weather (pouring rain and cold) and the forecast (pouring rain and cold), the Big Dig will be moved to tomorrow – Sunday, June 10th – same time, same place. For those dedicated gardeners who don’t mind getting mud on their boots and believe that the very best time to move a plant is in the rain, you are still welcome to come today but helpers, advisors and food will only be available tomorrow. I wil be happy to provide hot tea and coffee in the “foyer” and lighten your wallet.

Pat McKinney

If your looking for something to do in the rain

Rhodo Weekend: Lecture: Rhododendrons & Azaleas: Well-known photographer and rhododendron enthusiast FREEMAN PATTERSON discusses his favourite varieties, planting tips, and cultural methods. We have a great collection of beautiful and interesting rhodos and azaleas to offer you.

Kristl Walek-Gardens North,June's Guest Speaker

Kristl Walek is the owner of Gardens North, a Canadian seedhouse offering an eclectic mix of perennial and woody seed as well as fern spores.
In 1992 Kristl gave up a civil law practice in Ottawa to start Gardens North as a humble, small dining-room operation with the seed of plants from her own backyard. Since then the business has grown to international proportions; as of 2012 sales are in over 40 countries and still growing. A high proportion of the seed she sells is wild collected. She moved from the Ottawa Valley to Annapolis Royal 3 years ago, where she continues to run the business.
Kristl is considered one of the leading experts on seed germination and has written and lectured on the topic to many international organizations. She was a contributor to Norm Deno’s “Seed Germination and Theory” and in 1998 was the 1st recipient of the NARGS Geoffrey Charlesworth writing prize for her article on seed collecting, cleaning and storage. She is currently in the final stages of a book about the propagation of eastern Canadian native plants from seed.
Kristl describes herself as being one of those fortunate individuals who has been able to earn a living doing the thing she loves most.

John Armstong: Dahlia and Gladiola Expert

May's guest speaker will be John Armstrong
Growing  Dahlia Culture And Cultivation

Gardeners from many countries have chosen to grace their homes, landscapes, and garden plots with dahlias, one of the longest blooming flowers in cultivation. No doubt, many reasons exist for their choice. While many grow dahlias solely as a decorative planting, others are more interested in artistic arrangement and cut flowers. For decorative landscaping; they may use them as focal points in the home garden where they may select a plant that possesses a huge bloom, 12 inches or more in diameter, and thereby create a conversation piece. Still, others may concentrate on border plantings (12 inches or so in height) or mass planting of one variety for a special effect. Some find additional uses by using the dahlia for screens where the selected variety is crucial. The landscaping potential is great and the few above examples serve mainly to pique the imagination. In one home garden, the gardener has successfully groomed a small growing dahlia waterlily formation to cascade to the ground near his pool. The number of possibilities abounds including patio dahlias that are specially grown in ornamental troughs, pots, and tubs.

Some birds fly south in the winter but where do to the Fundy Gardeners Go ??

Some members go to Africa

Freeman Patterson

The attached photo was made in 2011 in a mountain desert wilderness in the extreme northwest corner of South Africa, close to where I was sleeping on a rock. I'll be going back there this year. The tree is a "kokerboom" or "quiver tree," Aloe Dichotoma, so called because the Bushmen used the rubber-like bark to make the quivers for their arrows. It's habitat is very restricted - just about 300 km. north and south of the Orange river, which forms the border between South Africa and Namibia. I made the photograph at sunrise, when the sun had just cleared the mountain range behind me and the first red rays of the sun were striking the mountainside to the west. You can see other quiver trees in the distance.

February's Guest Speaker Jude Carson-Community Garden Project

Jude Carson is a retired writer and keen gardener.
While she was writing, gardening was one of her main subjects. It was also during that time that she and other interested people conceived the idea of the Greater Saint John Community Garden. She'll tell us about the beginning days and the status of the Garden today, still thriving in its 13th year, and bring photos to show its progress.

What is the Community Garden Project The Greater Saint John Area Community Garden (G.S.J.C.G.) is a volunteer project working with the Leisure Services Department of the City of Saint John. It was established to provide an opportunity for citizens to have a place to garden. The Community Garden is located on the former site of the Rockwood Elementary School.

Meeting place is at regular meeting location - New Date Feb-8
